Yesterday I raised a lot of money for the Hope Foundation with some of my family. I want to thank everyone in Cashel for being so generous. My uncle took some photos of us.

Golf Set

On Wednesday I sold a golf set for €25. I am also selling 4 other items. All of the money I raise will go to the Hope Foundation. The links to the items are below.

Empty Gas Barrels

The other day my dad put up an empty gas barrel for sale online for €15 and said he would donate what he got to my cause. Nobody expected anyone to actually buy it but just recently it was sold to a man in Clonmel for €5 over the asking price!

This got me thinking about what other weird things I could sell for charity but my useless brain couldn’t think of anything so I decided to write about it and ask you.

Bake Sale

On Monday my father brought a few treats we baked into work with him to raise awareness for The Hope Foundation and to what I was doing. When he came home from work I was shocked to find out that his workmates in Hostelworld had donated over €80 to my cause! I want to write this post to thank all of the people who donated money to such a great cause. I hope to achieve my goal of raising €2300. Kolkata and The Hope Foundation

I am writing this to show the horrible things going on in Kolkata (Calcutta) right now, What the Hope Foundation are doing to help and why I’m raising money for them.

Kolkata is a city in India that is highly over populated. It has the same population as Ireland even though you could fit 380 Kolkatas in Ireland! That’s like getting everyone in Ireland and squeezing them into Dublin city. I made this image to give you some perspective:

As a result of this one third of people living in Kolkata live in slums. That doesn’t even include the 70,000 people who don’t have a house at all! Think about how hard it would be to find a job in Kolkata but don’t worry! You might struggle to find work but your child won’t. That’s right! Children are expected to work at ages as young as 3! Also surveys show that of 68% of child labourers aged between 12 and 18 are physically abused and 30% of child labourers are sexually abused!

These children live horrible lives but it could be worse. At least they don’t live on the railroads and spend most of their time getting high. Oh wait, a lot of them do live like this. Here’s of where these children sleep every night:

Now do you understand why this place is nicknamed the City of Joy? Neither do I.

The idea of people living like this sickens me but there is still HOPE. The Hope Foundation is an Irish charity dedicated to combating the issues that I have mentioned above. The organization works hard to protect street children from dangers as well as provide the children with education, healthcare, rehabilitation, life skills and hope. 96% children aged 6 – 14 attend school in the slums where the Hope Foundation operates. They built a hospital which has saved the lives of thousands of people and has allowed mothers to safely give birth. They are making significant progress in water sanitation and they have detoxification programs for children addicted to drugs.

The Hope Foundation have achieved a lot but they are a very long way from getting rid of the inequality that goes on in Kolkata. The Hope Foundation need all the help they can get and that’s why I am writing this. I need your help, The Hope Foundation need your help and the street children need your help. I am asking you to please donate a little money to save a child’s life.

Munster v Edinburgh

I’m just back from the Munster v Edinburgh match in Thomond Park. Munster beat Edinburgh 28-14 with Conor Murray scoring 2 tries and getting Munster a bonus point. Conor Oliver also scored a try on his 21st birthday.

But it wasn’t all tries and birthdays for Munster. 5 minutes in Jack O’Donoghue had to be brought off on a stretcher after taking a nasty hit from an Edinburgh player which lead to Edinburgh’s first of 2 yellow cards.

Man of The Match was awarded to Edinburgh’s blindside Magnus Bradbury but I have no idea why. In my opinion it should’ve been awarded to Conor Murray.

I also raised a large amount of money for The Hope Foundation outside Thomond Park thanks to all the great Munster fans.

Competition Outside Semple

As you all know the All Ireland semi-final between Kilkenny and Waterford took place on Saturday. There was a constant stream of supporters heading towards the stadium wearing either white and blue or black and yellow. But there was third group of people at Semple that day wearing different colours. And they weren’t there for the sport. They were there to raise money for the Hope Foundation. This wasn’t just one group of fundraisers. There were teams of people in Hope t-shirts on every street corner within a 2 miles radius of the stadium selling Hope bars. I know what you’re thinking: “Wow that’s amazing! I’m sure they raised so much money for the charity! It’s great to see so many people active in the community.” Well it’s not great for me.

You see, I am also a fundraiser for Hope and I was foolish enough to think that I could just waltz into the stadium and sell a few boxes without having to compete with teams of people selling the same product as me. The idea that people would buy anything from me when there were hot girls just around the corner who had ordered the small Hope t-shirt instead of the medium t-shirt was delusional. There is nothing more disheartening than being met with the words “Oh I already bought a bar”.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m being over dramatic. I ended up selling more bars than expected and everyone else raising money for Hope just restored my faith in humanity. See I even took a picture of the me holding the almost empty box!

Selling Bars

Yesterday, my dad and I went to Semple Stadium to sell Butlers Chocolate bars and raise money for the Hope Foundation. The weather was great and there were large crowds of people going to Waterford v Wexford and Claire v Galway. The perfect setting to fundraise. We sold all of our bars just in time before it started to rain. It was as if the rain waited politely for us to complete our work.

While I was outside Semple Stadium trying to sell bars, a few people told me that they had already bought the Hope bars from someone else. After brief investigation it turned out that two people were down the road selling bars for the Hope Foundation and stealing my customers! You are probably getting the notion that I was annoyed by this but there was really no issue. I know you want to read about an epic battle to the death to determine who is the The Ultimate Bar Salesman but all I have for you is a friendly conversation about the boxes which were used to contain our chocolate bar money. In the end my box was proven to be superior resulting in myself being dubbed The Ultimate Bar Salesman! My competition (If you could even call them that) used puny buckets to hold their money earned, I on the other hand crafted a perfectly sized container with a coin slot.
